Gardening for Survival

I remember getting with other kids at daycares or in the neighborhoods during play time. One of our games was pretending we were Native Americans. I always found their way of life fascinating.

They wasted very little and they respected the land that they lived on. They lived in harmony with nature and understood the seasonality of life in all its various aspects.

I attempt to live that way as best as I can, especially considering the highly consumer-driven world that surrounds us. I recycle everything I can and attempt to minimize the amount of waste I generate.

One of my attempted hobbies is gardening, though I know many who are better at it than me. I don’t seem to have a green thumb, so any plant that I can keep alive for an extended period of time brings me great joy.

In learning more about my area and what I can grow throughout the year, I came across information about companion planting, which was related to the Native Americans on something called “the three sisters”.

After reading that article, I was hooked. My efforts to develop even my tiny garden has become focused on what I can grow together to yield the most crops and the best nutrient and flavor from the crops I can grow.

In these studies, I also found that rotating crops is highly important. In some documentaries I came across on plant based diets or organic farms, it discussed how changing out the crops grown in an area is required to keep the soil healthy, happy and balanced so that it can continue to yield crops over time.

In this way, nature has never ceased to amaze me.

When I do my gardening from seed, I attempt to use heirloom seeds, as the seeds from those plants can be re-planted to harvest more when the next time comes around. My gardening is in the process of being developed depending on the time of year and the time I have available. I have extra work to do, as my area doesn’t have soil – we have sand and dirt – so I need to get bags of Miracle-Gro for the area that I am planting, which of course is dependent on my budget at the time. Further, I also have to be aware of battles with the deer, squirrels and crows (among any other potential critters) that will also be watching my garden.

Right now, my plan for my garden is based on yielding things for dual purpose: (1) food for consumption and (2) medicinal.

Food for consumption is the greatest concern for anyone creating a plan for survival in the assumption that grocery stores are no longer viable for some reason. Although it is good in these situations, depending on what you grow, it could be handy in the event of saving a trip to the grocery store because you grow it in your garden. Whether there is a survival situation in place or not, I am personally of the belief that a garden of any size that provides food is good for anyone.

Some things you will want to consider when planning out your garden are:

  • How many people will it need to feed?
  • How much will that number of people rely on the yield from that garden?
  • What is the minimum yield for this garden to feed that number of people adequately based on the reliance of that garden?
  • How much should we plan for as extra to build reserves in the event of a bad harvest?
    • For more information on preserving and storing food, see an earlier blog post here.
  • How much should we have in reserves per person in the event of a bad harvest?
  • Do we have the capability, skill, and storage space for the reserves in the event of a bad harvest?

The second area I consider is medicinal. Since many people today rely on the traditional forms of medicine, I don’t think this is immediately considered for survival preparations. However, I think that it is beneficial to learn these alternative forms of healing in addition to the current, modern forms.

In this way, I always found the medicine wo/man of the Native American tribes to be the most interesting. They knew what plants to use in what forms to reduce fever, counteract infections, and heal the various members of the tribes. Many people today I don’t think get a chance to even consider this as an option. However, if you don’t have a medical professional in your survival group, it would be beneficial to have some of this knowledge and the items in your garden in the event of medical need, whether in a survival situation or not.

In this regard, it is good to take a walk around your neighborhood to see what plants already exist that you can use for healing purposes. Having an herb garden is always a good idea, as herbs have various healing properties. Additionally, herbs are also good for food consumption needs and I am a very big cheerleader of things that can be both a healing agent and a food source.

Plants can be temperamental and don’t necessarily like certain climates, so be sure to investigate what kinds of plants like your area and especially what plants can pull double duty in both the healing and consumption categories.
