Communication in SHTF

No matter what social situation you find yourself in, there is no doubt that technology rules the day – especially when it comes to our communication.

One thing I have really enjoyed doing throughout my life is sitting in public areas – parks, restaurants, malls, anywhere really – and watch people. Sound creepy? I don’t do it to be creepy, and it can be done in a way that no one notices.

I watch people to see how they walk, talk, and interact with others. I find it fascinating. If I’m at a restaurant, I sometimes listen in to the conversations other people have – also fascinating in some ways.

What have I found from watching and listening in on others?

  • Many times, I am usually at a table at a restaurant by myself. Sometimes I will read a book while I eat. Other tables around me have a couple or a family – every single one of them (sometimes with the exception of babies and toddlers) have their face glued to some kind of device
  • Discussion at a table of two or more people is sparse at best because they are eyeball deep in their devices.
  • Any conversations I do overhear are generally pretty shallow, whether at a restaurant or some other location. It’s all surface level – how’s the weather, did you see the latest YouTube cat video….

Perhaps only two times in my life I have had the pleasure of being in a group of people that actually talked and discussed topics. We would toss out a thought or an idea, consider it, add another thought or idea to it and just saw where it went. No one got offended or went off on some kind of tirade. It was an intelligent exchange of ideas and opinions and perspectives, which were respected by all participants in the group.

In all honesty, that is what I thought my college experience would be – finding random groups of people in the dining halls or out on some common area under a tree, going from one group to another – nope, they didn’t exist.

I have seen and experienced many communication experiences that go horribly wrong because of mis-understandings. These mis-understandings happen, generally, for one of the following reasons:

  • As noted by Stephen Covey (or whomever said it first): listening with the intent to reply, not with the intent to understand
  • Having to put a simple sentence through so many filters in one’s brain to be sure you don’t offend anyone and lose track of the point trying to be made
  • Political Correctness in general – personally, at this point, it is at a ridiculous level and needs to be pared back if not eliminated
  • Public schools teaching students to parrot and not think
  • All-emoji texting and other texting short-hand
  • Society having the attention span less than that of a goldfish

I am sure there are more, but this is what I can come up with off the top of my head.

Tone, inflection, pace, body language, word-usage: they all play a big part in communication and from what I have seen, especially among my own Millennial generation and younger, is that communication seems to be degrading and many can’t string together two coherent thoughts if their life depended on it.

When the life of yourself and your loved ones are on the line, when technology isn’t there, would you be able to effectively communicate with others?

Spend some time talking to the people in your life, no technology. Maybe write a letter to someone. I know I don’t get those very often and I wouldn’t mind seeing that in my mailbox as opposed to all the junk mail I get.

How are you building better skills to communicate effectively in a SHTF situation?

Yes, I use WordPress. It was pretty easy to setup for this site, of course I am still learning and sometimes find new things. With WordPress, you can use coding skills to alter existing themes with more custom stuff, but the ability to code doesn’t seem to be necessary in my experience with WordPress.

I will take a look at the length, however, I try to keep the length as short as possible since people are generally busy and I saw those articles that note that people have an attention span less than that of a goldfish. If I can get my point across quickly and succinctly, I will not make my posts longer than necessary. Some are on the longer side though.
